Learning outcome

I am a firm believer that if you can't get near the animal, you can't treat the animal. This session will focus on practical advice for veterinarians who may see camels in their practice. We will discuss everything from how to actually "get near" the pet camel to safely perform basic veterinary procedures and also highlight the owners obligations regarding general health, e.g. vaccinations and general health advice.

I will also provide references for medications, sedation, and field anaesthesia. We will focus on camel-specific parasite control and other info that we didn't learn at university.

Dr Margaret Bale
Dr Margie Bale is an Australia-based veterinarian who has been working for 27 years in predominantly mixed and dairy cattle practice. Margie has both private practice and university experience within University of Queensland, recently providing the Camelid Lecture series for the Veterinary students. Margie's particular focus has been herd health, reproduction and surgery of all production animals. Seven years ago she was approached to develop veterinary and management systems for the emerging camel industry in Australia (including dairy, meat and tourism). She now works with camels on large scale projects here and overseas as well as her continued assisted reproduction work in cattle. Margie has worked in Dubai for the camel veterinary hospital and embryo transfer and reproduction clinic. As well as her research projects, Margie has presented at camel industry forums both in Australia and worldwide. Margie fully appreciates the challenges that are faced by the mixed practitioner when it comes to "clients with camels". She is particularly enthusiastic about providing veterinarians with quality information to be able to service these animals well as part of a busy mixed, large animal practice.
